Robert Eugene Schmitt, Sr.
CHARLESTON – Robert Eugene Schmitt, Sr., a member of the Greatest Generation and husband of Jane Truax Schmitt passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 13, 2014. Robert was born on February 19, 1924 in Mobile, Alabama. His parents were James B. Schmitt and Alma H. Schmitt. At the age of 17, Robert joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the North Atlantic and Pacific theaters and was a plank owner of the U.S.S. Vulcan. He attained the rank of First Class Boatswain’s Mate. After his discharge he joined the Naval Reserve. He worked as a machinist at the Alabama Shipyard and Brookley Field Air Force Base. Bob moved to Charleston to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1967. After retiring from the shipyard he was employed by Norton, Womac, and Kirby and True Value Hardware. Robert is survived by a daughter Wanda Royal (Ernest) of Atlanta, GA, and a sister Genevieve Smith of Mobile, AL. He was preceded in death by his sons Robert Eugene Schmitt, Jr. and Alfred E. Schmitt. He has 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. In addition there are numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 310 Hibben Street, Mt. Pleasant, SC on Monday, February 17th at 11:00. Mass of Christian Burial will be in Mobile, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Veteran’s Victory House in Walterboro, SC
