Sophie M. Kocis

Sophie M. Kocis 97, of North Charleston, SC died peacefully at home on September 3, 2017.  She was the daughter of the late Szymon and Judwiga Kustron and was born March 27, 1920 in Farrell, PA.   She was married to the late George Kocis and raised three children, Georgiann (Mike) Sujka with whom she lived for the last 7 years, Robert (Linda) Kocis in Post Falls, ID, and Stevan (Gert) Kocis in Sharon, PA.

Before moving to North Charleston, Sophie made her home in West Middlesex, PA and was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd.  There she quilted, catered, gardened, sang in the choir and volunteered on various committees.  At 80, Sophie drove the “old people” to church.  As a loving mother, she was an accomplished baker and seamstress making most of the families’ clothing.   Sophie’s “cup was always half full, never half empty”, and she taught her family that forgiveness brings peace and love.

Besides her children, Sophie leaves behind 5 grandchildren:  Susan (Mac) Baughman, Michael (Theresa) Sujka, Christine (Bryan) Dukes, Rob (Esther) Kocis, and Lauri (Dave) Ince.  She had eight great grandchildren Hunter, Kinsey, Will, Kate, Andrew, Faye, Nova and Natalie.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Telega, her sister-in-law, Ginny Kocis, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Mary and Stella, and 4 brothers, Stanley, Teddy, Wally and Raymond.

Sophie was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.   A Memorial Mass will be held on October 10 at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas Church, 6650 Dorchester Rd., North Charleston, SC  29418.  Interment will be made at St. Ann’s Cemetery in Hermitage, PA.  South Carolina arrangements are entrusted to the care of Simplicity Lowcountry Cremation & Burial Services. In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial donations to any of the Hurricane Harvey or Irma relief efforts, or to your charity of choice.
