Shirley Greene

Obituary of Shirley Greene

Shirley A. Greene, 77, of Charleston, SC when able, had regular meditations each morning. On the morning of March 15, 2018 however, Shirley was ‘caught up’ to meet the Savior personally and peacefully. A Home Going Celebration will be held Friday, March 23, 2018 at 11a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 446 Meeting Street. Interment will follow in Monrovia Cemetery. Friends, family and organizations will gather and honor her legacy on March 22, 2018 from 5-7pm, also to be held at Wesley United Methodist Church. Ms. Greene was born August 23, 1940 in Charleston, SC, daughter of Willie Brown and Emma Green Barnes. Shirley attended Immaculate Conception School and Burke High School. She continued her education and graduated from Claflin College with a B.S. in Education and went on to be one of the first teachers to integrate Mitchell Elementary School in downtown Charleston, where she taught for 30 years. Shirley said that Mitchell School was a ‘family’. Many students still remember Ms. Greene riding her bike (Susie Mae) to campus. Ms. Greene was active in many civic and musical organizations. These included; Lifetime membership at Wesley United Methodist Church, The Choraliers, Girl Scouts, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and her beloved Roseanna Tent #18. Ms. Greene enjoyed sharing her voice in song and was a regular contributor to the Mojo festivals held annually here in Charleston. Shirley was a humble person who wanted her obituary to say “She was born, she lived, and she died” but there was so much that she gave to everyone she met in between those life markers. She made each person she met feel valued. Shirley A. Greene loved people and people loved Shirley A. Greene. Having no biological children of her own, Shirley was auntie, grandma, and mama to many. She leaves to carry on her spirit of loving, living and laughter to those she cherished dearly and held fondly. These include: nieces, (grand); nephews, (grand), cousins, her caring neighborhood, the senior group at Wallingford Presbyterian Church, members of Wesley United Methodist, the many students from Mitchell Elementary School, Gamma Nu Chapter of AKA sorority, and Roseanna Tent #18. She was preceded in death by her sister Emily Coles (Barnes); Matiel Williams (Barnes); and Emma G. Barnes and Willie Brown.
