Despite his challenges, he was a trooper and did his best to stay strong until the end for his children. His smile and humor in the most mundane life circumstances even after losing his wife is what helped to keep him going. During this time, through the efforts of family friends he was able to rediscover his love for hunting and kill his first deer since being a young kid, even as weak as he was. He was so proud of his sharpshooter skills were not lost after all this time. He loved watching old western and cowboy shows, no matter how many times he had already seen them.
Jim met the love of his life, Evelyn Diane Byars Marsh in Columbia, SC, who passed away October 30, 2020. It was love at first sight. They became engaged on their first date, and were married for 56 years.
