Obituary of Bessie Fogle
Bessie Mae Fogle, daughter of the late John W. Nettles and Ellie Nettles Oldham of Orangeburg, and widow of Paul Daniel Fogle, Sr., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 6, 2018. Born in 1928, she recently celebrated her 90th birthday, and has been a resident of the Lowcountry since 1961.
She is survived by a son, Paul Daniel Fogle, Jr. (Jenny); daughter and son-in-law, Daniell F. and Pastor Greg Smith, and grandson, Aiden Smith, all of Charleston; younger sister, Oreta Williams, of Cameron; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Willie Nettles, and sister, Elma Hooker, predeceased her many years ago. Mrs. Fogle was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church, North Charleston, for nearly 60 years, where, in earlier years, she worked with youth and, later, faithfully taught the Ladies’ Sunday School Class for decades. She remained active in all functions of the church, and enjoyed the Girlfriends group and learning Spanish in a class hosted by the church.
She worked at the cotton mill in Orangeburg while going to school, served as a Gray Lady Red Cross volunteer for 4 years in Beaufort, worked as an operator for the telephone company with her sister, Oreta in Columbia, and worked in Charleston as an executive secretary at Atlantic Coast Life. After having children, she served as a substitute teacher at all of Hanahan’s schools so she could work and still be at home with her children. She was an avid reader and walked daily.
Friends and family are invited to attend Mrs. Fogle’s funeral service on Sunday, October 14th, 2:00pm at Friendship Baptist, 5032 Lackawanna Blvd, North Charleston. Visitation is on Saturday, October 13th, 6:00-8:00pm, also at Friendship Baptist.
Funeral arrangements made by Simplicity. Friends who wish to do so may send flowers, or memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church in Mrs. Fogle’s name.
