Obituary of Daniel Morey

Daniel “Dan” Kirk Morey of Charleston, SC, passed away on his 54th birthday, December 7, 2018.  Dan was born in Washington, DC, to Sarah M. Morey and Robert E. Morey.  As a child, growing-up in the Washington DC Metro Area, Dan spent a great deal of time sailing on the Potomac River, which initiated his love for being on the water.  Dan was a nice boy who enjoyed being a cub scout and then a boy scout.  During high school, his family relocated to James Island, SC, and soon moved to Folly Beach.  Dan proudly graduated from Fort Johnson High School. 

As a lifelong commercial fisherman, Dan spent many hours exploring the creeks and marshes and communing with God.  He loved his life in nature, the beauty of the ocean, and waking-up early in the mornings to watch the sun rise.  Dan loved the sea, the islands, and observing the birds, fish, and all of the plants and animals.  He liked that his work allowed him to help feed people.  Sometimes Dan collaborated with SCDNR by providing marine specimens for research projects.  Preserving the beauty and integrity of the coastal ecosystem and its resources was close to his heart.  

Dan was a kind and loving man who believed in following his heart in all areas of his life.  He respected nature and enjoyed being alive every day of his life.  Dan tried to live a quiet, private life.  He was a spiritual man who saw God in all of nature.  He was passionate about God and spent a lot of time meditating on the wonders of Creation and on his purpose in life.  Dan cared about people and music; he had many friends who enriched his life. Dan loved his friends and his family.  Dan was so very proud of his wonderful daughter, Miranda; she was his pride and joy.  Dan saw Miranda as his greatest treasure; he believed in her and reveled in her accomplishments. 

Daniel “Dan” Morey was the man, the lover of his family, and the captain of his boat.  It is fitting that his ashes will become part of the natural environment that he so loved.  

Dan was predeceased by his father, Robert E. Morey.  He is survived by his mother, Sarah M. Hatcher, his daughter, Miranda Reed; his brother, Robert Morey; his sister, Susan Gilmore; his niece, Sarah Murphy; his nephew, Robert “RJ” Murphy, and his nephew, Robert “Bob” Morey. 

On Monday, December 17, 2018, there will be a Memorial Service for Dan at Harbor View Presbyterian Church, 900 Harbor View Rd, Charleston, SC.  The family will receive friends in the narthex beginning at 1:00 pm, followed by worship at 2:00 pm.
