Obituary of William J Morgan

William J. Morgan, affectionately known as Bill, passed peacefully to be with the Lord on the evening of Feb. 22, 2019, in Charleston, SC, after a brief illness. He was 99.

Bill and devoted wife Marlie, were married for 68 years. He was a loving father to Jeanette, Estelle, Teresa and Angela, grandfather to Tommy, Olivia and Chloe, and great grandfather to Gavin and Tegan.

Born in Wilmington, NC to Sudie Stuckey and Samuel Morgan, he was big brother to five other children. At an early age, he displayed a keen mechanical aptitude: he loved to see how things worked, and he excelled at sports, his lifelong favorites being golf and baseball, ever loyal to the St. Louis Cardinals. Bill enrolled in a technical high school in St. Louis. He enlisted in the Army, receiving field training in electronics and radio telecommunications. He excelled at teaching and supervision. He landed on Omaha Beach, the day after D-Day.

While stationed in Korea, a part of peace-keeping forces as a civilian, he met and married the lovely Marlie Lee, an accomplished seamstress and translator. They embarked on their new life together to the U.S., honeymooning in Oahu, Hawaii.

Bill pursued jobs along the eastern seaboard, his growing family in tow, working for RCA, Philco-Ford, Lockheed Martin, and NASA, with its numerous space missions. He later became self-employed in Charleston, to be close to his cherished mother. He made friends wherever he went, through both work and golf.

He retired in Charleston, to pursue being a nearly scratch golfer, playing area courses regularly. He especially enjoyed mentoring young kids learning the game of golf, giving freely of his time and advice at the range, at his neighborhood course, Shadowmoss. He always encouraged them to "hit 'em good!"

Golf was analogous to life for Bill, with good days, not-so-good days, but always moving forward. He achieved his final hole-in-one at the age of 94. He is loved and missed by all he touched.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Jude's Children's Hospital may be made.
