Steve was a wonder friend and mentor to me in the field of quality and operational excellence. We bonded not only within our professional fields, but also with our mutual love of music, concerts and a frosty pint of beer. Steve gave a lot of his time to our local ASQ Section as a member, presenter and host. He is already greatly missed by those that knew him. My sincere condolences to his friends and loved ones.

Steve's passing has come as a terrible shock to many of us in the Baldrige community. He had been a passionate advocate for and contributor to the national Baldrige Program since 1994. Although he displayed a quiet leadership style, all who new him or heard him speak on quality and performance excellence recognized and respected his expertise. Steve was a kind hearted soul who gently touched the lives of many. We will truly miss him. Please know that many will be sending thoughts and prayers of comfort to all his loved ones.

I knew Steve through his advocacy of Baldrige and the Massachusetts program that supported it, MassExcellence (now PiPEx). He was a passionate ambassador for all things related to excellence and quality. He was also an optimistic, cheerful person ready to greet anyone with a smile and a hearty handshake. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Hodlin family in this very difficult time of need. I had the wonderful pleasure working for Steve at DST Output in CT, and he truly was a wonderful and gifted leader. I remained in touch with him after those years, and he was an amazing friend. He always looked for the best in people and inspired them in many ways. His courage and passion for excellence was known to the thousands of people he touched in his life. This is a very sad day for everyone, and I know he always spoke with great love and pride of his children and family. He loved those Boston sports teams, and we shared that gift in many wonderful conversations. We are forever in his debt for his compassion and friendship over the years. I know he loved his friends and leadership partners, especially DSTO and Blackbaud. His knowledge was a gift to all, and his love for his family was amazing. Rest in Peace my friend, and keep them laughing !

I am sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I got to know him through Baldrige. He was the coach for our team on a site visit in Massachusetts. It was my first experience as team leader and Steve helped make it very easy. He had a wonderful way of helping us understand without telling us the answer. I connected with him a few times over the years and he always was helpful and upbeat. I'll remember that.

My deepest sympathy go to the Hodlin Family. I worked with Steve many years ago at BFDS. Steve was good man and shared his knowledge with anyone he came across.

I loved attending Steve's Lean Six Sigma trainings at Blackbaud. Steve never passed me in the hallway without saying hello and asking how I was doing. He was a pleasure to work with and we were able to learn so much from him. He always went out of his way to tell me he met my brother at King Street to watch football. I can picture him wearing his Patriots Jersey through the halls of Blackbaud and I am for the first time ever so happy the Patriots won the Super Bowl and he was able to watch that. So many thoughts and prayers for your family during this difficult time. I pray in our lifetime we find a cure for this terrible disease. Best, Rachel

Steven was a brilliant, creative, and generous man. I had the pleasure of working with him on two video projects over the past 3 years. One where he helped write the script and coach our executives as actors while I filmed and edited the funny skit to play at a company event. The other was to help spread a good tip on how to keep email clear of clutter and work more efficiently. His wheels were always turning. I will miss his warm, positive smiles and hellos in the hallway. Rest In Peace my Friend.

Favorite memory: sitting in an intro to electrical engineering class we all had to take...waiting for a big exam to start. And in walks Steve...eating a banana...up the aisle he comes, until about 1/2 way up the ramp, he trips & smashes said banana in his face. Came up with the silliest grin on his face...it was all a joke & it broke the pre-exam jitters for us all. 40 years later, it still makes me smile. Rest In Peace, friend

Steve was an inspirational leader, a fun and caring person and while he is one of the smartest people I’ve ever met, he was also extremely down to earth and easy to talk to. In the five years I had the pleasure of working with Steve, he helped me countless times, teaching me so many things I will never forget. I am grateful and honored to have worked with him.

I grew up in Deerfield Ma. Umass class of 1984 met Steve through the Charleston Patriots fan club 3 years ago. Steve and I enjoyed talking our good old days at ZOOMASS and our love of Boston sports. Steve was the smartest person I ever met but had zero ego and was the nicest person anyone could meet. I am honored to be his friend and I will never forget him. Steve and I and a group of his friends spent this year years together. While he was in so much pain because of his back he danced and never complained. He is a very special man.

Steve was an incredibly inspiring leader and a wonderful human being. I feel honored to have known him and learned from him. He was always so full of joy and laughter. I last saw him in the airport in Nashville on his way home from watching his beloved Pats lose to the Titans in a game that I assumed would have been a big disappointment. He had a huge grin and talked about what a wonderful time he had with his friends on that trip. He had a contagious zest for life. We will miss him dearly.

Dear Brian,
You are in our thoughts and prayers during this sad time. There is nothing easy about losing a parent and especially so at such a young age. We are glad you got to spend time with your dad in the final weeks of his life. He had to be a great man to have such a wonderful son like you.
We are thinking about your sister Kim too and your entire family whom we can only imagine are all devastated by your dad's passing.
Sending lots of love and our deepest condolences,

I am so sorry to hear the news of Steve's passing. Steve Hodlin was the VP of Performance Excellence when he hired me as Performance Excellence Manager for VGT. I could sense his dedication to excellence even when we first spoke by phone during my initial interviews. When speaking with Steve, you knew he was the real deal and “he got it”. His depth of understanding and experience with the Baldrige Criteria was most impressive.
His dedication to the pursuit of excellence and improvement at work as well as the pursuit of his own continuing higher education inspired me to better myself, and to continue to be a life-longer learner. Steve was a wonderful coach and mentor. During the time we worked together, he encouraged me to go for opportunities that would challenge me and expand my level of expertise.
Most importantly, when I expressed an interest, he unconditionally supported me to become a member of the U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 176, the technical advisory group that develops the United States positions of the ISO 9001/9000 standards. He said, "Go for it!" and said "It will elevate you to expert level". That generous encouragement he offered is how I will remember him. The experience I have gained by participating in that group has been life-changing. For those reasons, I am eternally grateful that I had an opportunity to work with Steve. For me, he was the best boss ever!! May he rest in peace.
