Born in Gaffney, SC on April 9, 1936, the family moved to the Park Circle area where he attended North Charleston Methodist Church with his cousin Charlotte and graduated from North Charleston High School.  After one year at the Citadel he entered the Army serving for three years, part of it in Korea.  upon leaving the Army he moved back to North Charleston and was hired by Westvaco working for most of his time there, in the Chemical Lab until retiring at age 63.

Alfred and Olivia loved going to their place at Bonneau Beach where they were part of a wonderful group of friends fondly known as the “Lake Crowd”.  They would hook up their folding camper and travel, staying in National Park campgrounds from the Florida Keys to North Carolina and Yellow Stone Park.  Alfred also belonged to the local German Club which he truly enjoyed.
