Obituary of Carolyn Gilmore Rarey

Carolyn Gilmore Rarey, 71, of Summerville, SC passed away on Tuesday April 10, 2018 after a courageous nine-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Carolyn was born on January 8, 1947 to the late Carolyn Markovich Gilmore Henik and Marshall Muir Gilmore in Berwyn, Illinois and grew up in Gary, Indiana.

 

She graduated from Andrean High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Speech Therapy from Purdue University and a Master’s of Science in Elementary Education from Duquesne University.

 

Carolyn was the eldest of three daughters, and is preceded in death by her sister, Marsha Gilmore Wozniak (Michael) and survived by her sister, Margaret Gilmore Finnerty (Michael) and sister-in-law, KC Bradley.

 

Carolyn is also survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Charles “Rusty” Russell Rarey, daughters Rebecca Trudeau (Edward) and Deborah Lindstrom (Gregory); son Charles “Chip” Rarey (Meredith); and seven grandchildren, Charles and Alexa Rarey, Rachel and Cassandra Trudeau, Erik and Kyle Lindstrom, and Lauren Theil.

 

Carolyn was a speech therapist and later taught elementary school in both Pittsburgh, PA and Akron, OH, where she also raised her family, before moving to Carmel, IN, then to New Albany, IN and finally to Summerville, SC.

 

Carolyn had always been active in her church community with involvement in small groups, as well as with various volunteer efforts, including food pantry and marriage education.

 

She will be remembered for her hospitality, generous spirit, unconditional love, amazing courage, strength, and unwavering faith.  

A celebration of her life will be held on April 28, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Seacoast Church (Summerville Campus) 301 E. 5th North Street, Summerville, SC 29483.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Grace Center of Charleston, 29 Gamecock Ave., Charleston, SC 29403.
