Obituary of Harry Carroll Matthews, Jr.

Harry Carroll Matthews, Jr. (“Harry”), Beaufort, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, son of Harry Carroll Matthews, Sr., and Laurel A. Matthews.

Harry sadly leaves behind the love of his life for fifty-five years, Delores (“Dee”) Matthews, Beaufort, South Carolina; his daughter, Kimberly Tika Yeager, grandsons, Cade Matthews Yeager and Campbell Thomas Yeager, of Broken Arrow, OK; sons, Harry Carroll (“Trey”) Matthews, III (Amy), grandsons Harry Carroll (“Quade”) Matthews, IV and Quinn McKee Matthews; Travis LeGrande Matthews, Beaufort, SC, granddaughters, Reilly DiVecchio, Grass Valley, CA, Skylar Bolus, Charleston, SC, and grandson, Nicholas LeGrande Matthews, Vidalia, GA. He also leaves behind his sister, Joyce Spigner (Buddy), brother, Robert LeGrande Matthews, brothers-in-law, Sidney I. Rogers,Jr. (Theresa) and Darren Rogers, and many Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces and Great Nephews who he deeply adored, as well as Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, and many lifelong friends who he considered family. He will be deeply missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his Father Harry Carroll Matthews, Sr; Mother Laurel M. Matthews, and Sister Brenda M. McAlhany.

Harry retired from the Fort Jackson Military Base Civilian Personnel in 2003 as a Civil Engineer. Harry was a master of many trades, construction, electrical, plumbing, major renovations, to name a few. If you needed something done, Harry could do it. He had a passion for helping others and was always there when you needed him. He loved spending time with family and friends. Harry had a wickedly dry sense of humor and a contagious laugh. His smile, as well as, his beautiful blue eyes lit up the room; he was so loving, outgoing, kind, and one of the most honest men family and friends knew.

Harry was an avid Gamecocks football fan – win or lose, and one of his high schools’ fastest running backs and track stars. His family and friends will always remember his infamous nicknames, “Sumi,” “Hurrying Harry,” among others. He had a passion for football and baseball as well, spending many years coaching Dixie Youth Baseball and Football, as well as cheering on Dee’s softball and tennis teams. Harry also enjoyed sailing on his boat, “Pegasus” and traveling across the country and islands with Dee and friends. Harry was a loving husband, wonderful father to his three children, and a doting Papa to his grandchildren.

Dee and his family will be having a Celebration of Life for Harry on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club, 30 Yacht Club Drive, Beaufort, SC, from 3-7 PM
