Obituary of Joseph Daniel Thornley
Joseph Daniel Thornley "Joe" ,78, of Summerville SC, entered into rest with the Lord on Saturday December 4th 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents Alton Doyle Thornley and Alma Davis Thornley, and 8 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Crosby, three stepchildren, Vic Crosby (Nikki) of FL, Joe Crosby (Alana) of SC, and Suzie Phillips (Brian) of FL. Two grand children Chelsee Levesque and Justin Woodard of Summerville. Two great grands, Braylen and Kallie, whom he loved dearly, and a brother, Roger Thornley (Carol) of Charleston.
Joe was born in Bonneau SC, but his roots were planted deep in the Charleston area. He graduated from Charleston High School in 1963, and in 1965 he joined the Sumter National Guard where he served until 1971. During the next chapter of his life he cultivated his love for nature by attending Trident college to study horticulture and landscape design. After college those seeds of knowledge blossomed into a flourishing landscaping business. Joe was a free Mason and held dear to him the bonds that were formed in the brotherhood. He was an associate at Brandon lumber company for over 16 years, during which time he made many life long friends. Though usually very soft spoken, when Joe would speak of Barbara, who was not only his wife , but also his sweetheart from high school, his best friend in life, his 1st mate on the water, and his favorite shag partner on the dance floor, his smile could light up the room.
With sadness we say goodbye for now, with faith we know we will see you again.
Family will receive friends on Thursday December 9th at 1 PM at Old Fort Baptist Church, 10505 Dorchester Rd in Summerville. The funeral service will be held at 2 PM in the sanctuary.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in lieu of flowers.
