Obituary of Douglas Murta

Doug was born in Portsmouth, OH to Robert Murta and Nancy Royal Murta Meadows on June 22, 1958. He entered the US Navy on June 15, 1976 and served to June 14, 1982 where he reached the rank of Electronics Technician Nuclear 2.

Doug was then employed at the Charleston Naval Shipyard for a lengthy career and was being considered for promotion and transfer to Beaufort, when his liver disease illness incapacitated him to having to retire from the shipyard in the mid 1990's.

Doug met Diane Cosner Murta and her son, Michael Varner at VOC Rehab where he actually met Michael first when Michael asked him if he wanted to play a game of pool, then met and married Diane and helped her raise Michael. Diane passed away in August of 2006.

Doug met Linda Khoury Murta at Moncks Corner Seventh Day Adventist Church and they married on September 30, 2007. When they met, Doug had Pebbles, a female Chihuahua. Pebbles gave them her puppy, Sarina. They then adopted Diego, a Hairless Mexican Chihuahua because Doug felt outnumbered by females. They then adopted Charlie, a mixed Pit Bull just for good measure. Then Pebbles passed away and Doug missing Pebbles terribly after 15 years together, he and Linda decided to rescue Sophie, a part Chihuahua, part Jack Russell Terrier, and equality was restored. Doug had a wonderful sense of humor and constantly used it to entertain Linda. They laughed a lot! He was such a great cook Linda considered him the Head Chef and herself the Sous Chef. He enjoyed boating and was an avid fisherman.

Doug is preceded in death by his father, Robert, his sister Cheryl Burchett, and his mother, Nancy has passed since Doug’s death.

Doug is survived by his wife Linda of the home, his step-son Michael and step-grandson Michael, three brothers Robert Murta of Portsmouth OH, Richard Murta and James Gardner of Maui, HI, two sisters Theresa Blair and Brenda Mixson of Portsmouth, OH, and several nieces and nephews, to many of whom he was a surrogate father figure.
