Obituary of Emily "Sue" Green Long

Emily “Sue” Green Long, of Summerville, SC, passed away on June 23, 2022, with her family at her side. Sue was born on February 1, 1940, to Mattie Lou Cooper and Dock Green in Boston, GA. A loving mother, Sue raised her three daughters on her own after the departure of their father. She quickly found work in a sewing factory to provide for her girls. She went on to take business courses at Trident Technical College on Saturdays and became employed by the City of North Charleston in 1978. After 22 years of loyal service to the city and forging life-long friendships with her coworkers, she retired. Sue enjoyed reading, gardening, word puzzles, and most of all, spending time with her family, who she kept well-fed with her home-cooked meals.

Special thanks to Sue’s caregivers: the loving staff at Terra Bella and Kathy Tucker; as well as her devoted family and friends who assisted with her care: Nancy Paradice, Janet Mauney, and niece Janet Howard Morris.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her eight siblings, whose memories she kept alive by recounting stories about them. She is survived by her three beloved daughters, Nikki Paradice, Pam Long, and Patti McClure; her sister-in-law, Jeanette Ponder; her grandchildren, Robert Staton, Mandy Loechler, Samantha Cierlik-Spencer, and Kelli Goins; great grandchildren, Eric Spencer, Noah Bennett, Carol Dewitt, Daryl Dewitt, Derek Dewitt, Lisy Dewitt, Ella Staton, and Luke Staton; and great-great grandson, Ryker Bennett. Maci Croker and her children, Madison and Grant, were also dear to Sue.

A memorial service will be held with family and friends in Jefferson, GA on October 8, 2022. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Sue’s honor to The ARK of SC, which provides resources and support for caregivers and people living with Alzheimer’s (https://thearkofsc.org/donate).
