Obituary of Carolyn Thomas Platt

Carolyn Thomas Platt, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away on January 30, 2023 in Charleston, SC.  She was the daughter of Dr. John Dorsey Thomas and Claudia McQueen Thomas of Loris, SC. 

Born on July 18, 1928 at McLeod Infirmary in Florence, SC, Carolyn grew up in Loris and received her high school diploma from Loris High School in 1944 and her AB degree from Limestone College in 1948.  After living in Columbia SC, Charlotte NC, Chapin SC, and Fort Mill SC, she returned to the Grand Strand area in 1998 where she lived until moving to Charleston, SC in 2022.  She served as Treasurer of the Fort Mill Women’s Club for five years and Secretary of the Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful group.  Her hobbies included refinishing furniture and genealogy research.  She enjoyed helping people research their family tree and finding their roots.  Some of her family charts are in libraries in Marlboro County and the Ladson Library in Vidalia, Georgia.  Many of her family histories are on the Rootsweb site.

In 2011, Carolyn published her first book, Homemaker Helper, which included household hints, party ideas, how to write thank you notes and included family favorite recipes.

She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Nollie “Buddy” Platt and her twin brothers, Dr. John Dorsey Thomas, Jr. and Price Thomas.  Surviving are her three children, Claudia Rucker and husband, Marty, of Johns Island, SC, Stuart Platt and wife, Carol, of Lexington, SC and Stephani Canty and husband, Jay, of Charlotte, NC.  She is survived by seven grandchildren:  Melissa Rucker, Amanda Rucker, Courtney Walters, Shaun Platt, Kimberly Platt, Eliza Platt and Jamison Canty and one great grandchild, Joshua Platt.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the family home in North Myrtle Beach on April 1, 2023.  Memorials may be made to Crescent Hospice in Charleston, SC.
