Thomas Stoner Jr

Obituary of Thomas Harvey Stoner Jr

Thomas Harvey Stoner Jr passed away peacefully in Seabrook Island SC on February 26, 2023, at the age of 84. He was born in Tyrone PA on April 29, 1938, the eldest child of T. Harvey Stoner and Marie (McDermott) Stoner. He graduated from Tyrone High School in 1956 and then from Penn State University in 1960 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. After college, he served in the US Army in Fort Knox KY, then in the US Army Reserves.

Tom met the love of his life, Jan, during his Senior year at Penn State and they were married for over 61 years. Together, they raised their children to value family, friendships, faith, hard work, and community service.

Tom spent his entire professional career at Carpenter Technology (CarTech) working there for 37 years. He was first hired in 1961 as an Industrial Engineer at what was then Carpenter Steel in Bridgeport CT, and later moved over to the Accounting Department. In 1972, he transferred to CarTech in Reading PA and retired in 1998 as Manager of Payroll.

During the years in Connecticut, Tom learned to sail, which became a lifelong passion. From 1979, he was a Charter Member of the Blue Marsh Sailing Association (BMSA) in Reading PA, serving as Commodore, Vice-Commodore, and Secretary over the years. He was always active on various BMSA committees and especially loved the lifelong friendships that he and Jan made through BMSA. Under his leadership, the club enjoyed many opportunities to sail together throughout Pennsylvania, the Chesapeake Bay, the Bahamas, the Carribean, and the Aegean Islands in Greece. Tom also enjoyed sailing with family and friends in Long Island Sound, Delaware, South Carolina, and Florida.

He sailed wherever he could, whenever he could. He also enjoyed biking, camping, dancing, traveling, and attending Penn State football games. He and Jan liked to go on long road trips, often with family and friends, throughout the US and into Canada. They enjoyed many cruises including Alaska and the Caribbean, and were fortunate to travel internationally to Mexico, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific, all with friends and family.

A lifelong Catholic, Tom worshiped at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish in Whitfield, PA and Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Johns Island, SC. He volunteered for many years with the Spring Township Lions Club, the Vision Resource Center, and Berks Meals-on-Wheels.

He is survived by his wife, Janice (Meredith) Stoner; his children, Julie Pasquale (Tom), Tommy Stoner (Vanessa), and niece Lauren Sbihli (Michael); grandchildren, Jeremy Pasquale, Casey Stoner, Caden Stoner, Ethan Sbihli, Aaron Sbihli, and Caden Sbihli; great-granddaughter Tyler Pasquale; siblings, Vicki Ogden, Dorothy Smith (Dennis), Bill Stoner (Vera), Janet Sbihli, Bob Dickinson (Judy), Sherry Heim, and Deb Dickinson (Marge), and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass and Celebration of Life will be held in June 2023 in Reading PA with details to be announced. If desired, memorial donations can be made to St. Ignatius Loyola Parish at https://www.stignatiusreading.org/copy-of-donate or to the charity of your choice.
