Donald Hartzell, Sr Obituary

Our Dad, Donald Lee Hartzell, Sr. born January 24, 1938, in Latrobe, PA passed away unexpectedly on April 12, 2023. He was the son of Evelyn Hartzell Mitchell and was raised by his maternal grandparents.

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Friday, April 21, 2023 at Simplicity Lowcountry, Ladson Chapel.  The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. 

Dad was preceded in death by his wife Whendy Hartzell. He is survived by his 4 children: Donald L Hartzell, Jr., Cheryl Spearman (Wayne), Dewayne Hartzell (Pam), Steven Hartzell (Heather) and 2 Stepchildren: Charie Church (David) and Jessie Salladin. He had 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 4 step grandchildren.

In 1955, Dad served in The US Navy as a firefighter. In 1970, he continued his love for firefighting while employed by the Hanahan Fire Department. He retired his Firefighter’s uniform in 2019 while serving as Chief of the Sandridge Volunteer Fire Department.

Dad enjoyed working with his hand as a carpenter but, most of all, Dad loved life on the water fishing with family and friends.

Dad never met a stranger – he was a true friend to all that knew him. He will be forever missed.
