Marjorie Christman

Obituary of Marjorie Ellen Christman

Marjorie Ellen (Pogue) Christman, 98, formerly of Shelbyville, IL, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2023 at 11:00 am in Charleston, SC. Her husband, Norman, preceded her in death in 2005. In her own quiet way, she had a big and beautiful life.

Marjorie was born July 1924, on a country farm in Pickaway Township, just northwest of Findlay, IL.

Her parents were Olive Rita and Roy Pogue, and siblings were Dwight, Aubrey, Rosemary, and Marilyn. Rosemary continues to live in Minonk, IL.

Marjorie graduated from Findlay High School and Sparks Business College. She was working at the Shelbyville Courthouse when she met Norman Christman through some careful planning by Norman’s sister-in-law, June. They were married in May 1952. During their 53-year marriage, Norman’s job took them from their first home in Decatur, IL to live in many other places including Kansas, New York, Australia, and Michigan before returning to retire in Shelbyville, IL. Where ever the move took them, Marjorie made a wonderful home for her family with meals from scratch (yes, maybe an occasional can of Chung King), special request birthday cakes, beautiful holiday treats and traditions and well-loved flowers in the garden. She stitched many items for her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Participation in their church and later in garden club were Marjorie’s priorities in the community. She had many dear neighbors and friends over the years. Many probably have pieces of her plantings that she enjoyed sharing. Above all else, Marjorie brought her family up to know there is a God who loves us and to share that care with others.

Marjorie and Norman had 4 daughters, Diane, Connie, Sheri, and Susan. So many others have been welcomed into the family as it has grown to include 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and those additional special persons who have joined the family over time. Throughout the years, Marjorie and Norman looked for opportunities to gather the family together.

Marjorie’s efforts so often brought us together as a family, left us with many treasured memories and a large stack of recipes carefully clipped, ready to be tried. She was loved and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be observed in Shelbyville, Il at a later date. In her memory, you might plant some flowers or a tree and pause to enjoy them often.
