Obituary of Eunice Morton DeMichiel
Eunice Morton DeMichiel (96), died peacefully of natural causes on July 23, 2023 in Charleston SC. Born on March 14, 1927 in Gaffney SC to Joe and Pecolia Morton she later moved to Spartanburg SC where she grew up. Eunice wed Carl DeMichiel whom she was married to for 57 years until his death in 2004. Moving to Torrington CT after marriage, Eunice was actively engaged in her community and a confidant to many friends and family. She volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader, Youth Club Leader, Women’s Club Officer and Board Member of the Northwest Chapter of Mental Health. She was also an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church and served as a Justice of the Peace. Employed as a manager for a number of years at Torrington Savings Bank, Eunice had the unique experience of being held at gun point during a bank robbery (a story she often told). Eunice was also heavily involved in Connecticut Republican state and local politics and an avid bridge player. She was always ready for a spur of the moment adventure and was deeply loved and respected by all who knew her.
In 1979 she retired to Charleston SC, however, spent many summers back in CT with her family. While in Charleston she was an active member of Old St Andrews Parish Church, a Historical House Tour Guide, President of Olde Town Villas, volunteer at Bishop Gadsden just to name a few of her activities. And, she continued her love for playing bridge. She also enjoyed spending time at Magnolia Plantation, Middleton Place, holidays at Isle of Palms and Folly Beach with family and friends and involved in so much more of what the low country has to offer.
Eunice is survived by her daughter Carla Thornton of Bloomfield CT, granddaughter Kelly Thornton of Denver CO, grandson Jeffrey Thornton and wife Christie of Elgin SC, great grandson Hank Thornton, sister Laura Corey of Charleston SC and many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends in both SC and CT. Eunice also leaves behind her beloved friend Judy Dojan of Charleston SC.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother (Oliver Morton) and very dear sister (Jolean Wood).
Funeral services will be held at Old St Andrews Parish Church, Charleston SC at a later date.
