Stephen Buddin

Obituary of Stephen Barton Buddin

Stephen Barton Buddin, 72, went to be with his Savior in Heaven on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, after a courageous three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Steve was born in his beloved Summerville, South Carolina on September 1, 1951. He was the third son of Cecil Eugene Buddin, Sr. and Theodora Barton Buddin. He was a friend to all and a cousin to many. He was a kind and generous soul, and a hard worker who loved the Lord, and loved people as Jesus did. He relished good conversations, his Monday Card Group, Friday Breakfast Group, and ice cream anytime he could get it.

Steve graduated Summerville High School in 1969 and also attended Trident Technical College. He was a retired DOD Civil Servant and electrician whose work took he and his family from Charleston, to Southwest Florida, and back up Florida’s east coast before returning to Charleston where he retired as a maintenance supervisor at Joint Base Charleston in 2018.

Steve is survived by his loving and cherished wife of 45 years, Carol Grayson Buddin; three sons, William Albert Buddin, III (Leslie), Stephen Barton Buddin, Jr (Amber), and Grayson Legare Buddin; three grandchildren, Adelaide, Gideon, and Liam, with a fourth, Ruby, expected in December; one brother, William Howard Buddin, Sr; mother-in-law, Eleanor Burgin Grayson; a bonus brother in his cousin Cleveland Columbus Hiot, Jr (Lydia); three nieces and eight nephews, and a multitude of treasured cousins. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Cary Thomas Grayson, Sr; and oldest brother, Cecil Eugene Buddin, Sr.

Throughout his fight with cancer, Steve derived great comfort and strength from his relationship with Jesus and his faith in God’s greater plan. No matter how difficult his illness, he kept a smile on his face and joy in his heart. His concern was not with his own struggle, but with the wellbeing of his wife and family.

A memorial service to honor Steve’s life will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church in Spell Chapel on Sunday, October 15, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. with an ice cream social for family and friends immediately following. Memorial donations may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church Spell Chapel or to Roper St. Francis Hospice Care.
