Raimundo Tavares

Obituary of Raimundo Tavares

Raymond (Raimundo) Tavares, 84, of Summerville, S.C., husband of Maria Tavares, entered eternal rest on Thursday, December 14, 2023. He will be missed deeply by his wife Maria of 53 years, son Raymond Tavares Jr. and his wife Lisa, his grandchildren RJ, Jacqueline, and Justin Tavares, of North Carolina. and brother Joseph Tavares, of Rhode Island. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents John and Clotilde (Rego) Tavares, one sister Natalia Duarte, and two brothers, John Carlos Tavares and Gil Tavares.

Raymond was born in 1938 in the Azores, Portugal. He started working very early in his life, as was very customary for those times, when he learned the trade of being a men’s tailor. He moved to Providence, R.I. in 1969 and arrived on the memorable day Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. A memorable first day in a country he quickly grew to love. He and Maria married in 1970 and lived in Fall River, MA and spent a lot of time with family and friends in both the Fall River and Providence communities. He later moved to Braintree, MA. He worked tirelessly with his wife Maria and began to establish a great network of friends and later became proprietors of Raymond’s Tailor Shop in the early 1980’s. They were part of the fabric of the community and the store became a more popular place than a local bank branch on Saturdays where their customers came for stories, spirited debate, laughs and some alterations. He was involved in the community and was an usher at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for many years.

He retired from his tailoring business in the early 2000’s which made more time for his passionate hobbies of gardening and fishing with good friends. He enjoyed his time with his young grandchildren and countless home projects for his son and daughter-in-law. Raymond and Maria moved to Summerville in 2007. He was involved with his community of White Gables and loved his daily walks, his lunches with good friends and spending time with his family, his wonderful neighbors and getting to know the Charleston area and walking the Battery capped by having a nice lunch.

As his Alzheimer’s began to impact his daily routine, he spent his last several years at the Pruitt Health facility in Monks Corner, S.C.. His demeanor, his laughs and love for music kept the staff entertained and he was one of their favorite residents. Their love for him was evident during his stay and through his final days. Our family would like to thank them for all their support, care and compassion.

A celebration of life for Raymond will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests considering a donation be made to your favorite charity.
