Obituary of Mary Louise Grant

Mary Lou Grant was 85 years of age when she peacefully passed away in her home on August 14, 2020.

Mary Lou was born in East St Louis, IL and graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame in Belleville, Illinois in 1954. She married Claude Grant in 1955 and they lived in many different parts of the country while starting their family.  Mary Lou, who had four children, nine grandchildren and five great-grands was, for most of her life, a single parent as Claude had preceded her in death in 1973. She worked hard to maintain a stable life for her children and, in 1989 at the age of 54, Mary Lou successfully earned her BA degree in Social Work from Appalachian State University.  Upon graduation, she spent the next 10 years working in that field in Catawba County, NC.  Shortly after her retirement, Mary Lou moved to Goose Creek, SC to be near family there and the Charleston area.

Mary Lou was an intelligent, hard working woman, with a wonderful sense of humor that she displayed in the playful banter she shared with her children and grandchildren.  When she laughed, her joy always crept right out of her eyes!  She was a devout Catholic.  Mary Lou enjoyed oil painting, music, writing, and keeping up with current events.  She was an avid sports fan – a love that started with the St. Louis Cardinals from her childhood.  She especially enjoyed Women’s Tennis, Carolina Panthers and Clemson football.  Mary Lou never met a sweet treat that she didn’t like!  Although with life there is death, we are never fully prepared to say good-bye.  Mary Lou, you will be missed but will remain forever in our hearts.

Mary Lou is survived by her sister Eleanor Ann Gasaway, her children, Michael (Lorraine) Grant, Cynthia Louise Grant, and Christopher Grant, eight grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and friends she has made along the way.

Mary Lou is predeceased by her husband, Claude, her son, John (Julie), her grandson, Scott and her great-grandson, Hunter.
