Obituary of Vickie Styles

Vickie Styles, 69, of Charleston, SC, passed away surrounded by her family and friends on Tuesday December 8, 2020 after a brief but valiant struggle with pulmonary fibrosis.

She was born in Fort Benning, GA as the first child of Charles and Doris Styles (“Bill & Dee”).  Growing up in a military family she moved around often, living in places such as France, Germany, Colorado, and Connecticut. After the family settled in her parent’s hometown of Columbia SC, she graduated from AC Flora High School.  She then pursued her passion in mathematics and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Charleston.

Although she loved math, she was told as a woman she would be limited to careers such as a math teacher or bookkeeper and that any financial occupations higher than that were for men.  She did work as a bookkeeper and a brief stint as a math teacher for North Charleston High School.  However, she proved them wrong and as a single parent to four children went on to receive her CPA.  She was proud to serve the Charleston Museum for many years as Administrative Services Officer/CFO.  She also volunteered with the Special Olympics, serving as the director of the local Indoor Games one year.  She was passionate about politics and was always ready and prepared for a political debate.  She was a good friend with many life-long friendships.

Her life will be forever cherished in the lives of her children: Jessica (Cullen) Hill of Charleston, SC, TJ (Michele) Jett of Hobe Sound, FL, Rebecca (Tyson) Boyette of Asheville, NC, and Sara Jett of Charleston, SC; her adored grandson Charles “CJ” Hill; her siblings Charles (Robin) Styles of Fayetteville, NC, Sue Styles of Lexington, SC, Russell (Lisa Ann) Styles of Greenville, SC; and her many devoted nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial celebration is being planned for February 2021.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the USO in her honor.
