Obituary of Mavis R. Greenwood

Mavis Greenwood, 90, of Charleston entered into eternal rest on January 17, 2019.  Mavis was born August 8, 1928 in Bangor, Maine, to the late Clive Rollins and Jessie Hise (Stepfather Bob Hise).  She was predestined in death by her late husband of 45 years, Capt. Edward L Greenwood and son-in-law Douglas V Carson of Virginia.  She is survived by her children, Dennis L Greenwood and wife Marilyn of New Jersey.  Daughter, Colleen Carson of Virginia and son Barry Greenwood, and wife Karen of North/South Carolinas, (6) wonderful grandchildren, Van, Kevin, Taylor Carson, Deanna G. Fortunato, Morgan and Lane Greenwood and (7) great grandchildren.  She was predestined in death by her Sister, Gloria Deering of Palos Verdes, VA and Gilbert Rollins of Wytopitlock, Maine.  Also survived by her Sister, Phyllis Smith of Pomona, CA and stepsister Carolyn Caouette of Ct, and a host of special nephews and nieces in California and Maine.   Mavis was a member of Palmetto Community Church, Charleston.  She spent most of her life as a homemaker and co-owner of Charleston Marine Surveyors. She was a talented Seamstress, Artist and Cook.  Throughout her life she shared her organizational skills in capacities, such as PTA President Howard Wood Elementary (Torrance, CA) Garden Club President (Virginia Beach, VA) and President of the Palmetto Porsche Club (Charleston, SC).  She loved life and was always caught wearing a smile.  Mavis and Ed spent their early years in Southern California where their children were born and cherished those years spent raising the kids alongside her sisters Gloria and Phyllis.  Ed’s employment gave the family the opportunity to live abroad in Tokyo, Japan which broadened Mavis cultural experiences and allowed her to travel the orient and study art which produced many beautiful oil paintings which graced her homes throughout her life. Her love for the beach began on the West Coast and continued when employment opportunities took the family to Virginia Beach, VA.  She cherished most of those 13 years enjoying the beauty of the beach and the birth of her first grandchildren (it was here she became a Grammi).  Ed and Mavis looked toward retirement and chose Charleston, SC as the destination.  They began Charleston Marine Surveyors along with their son, Dennis.  Shadowmoss Plantation was just beginning development when Ed and Mavis made it their home and became members of Shadowmoss Plantation Country Club.  Highlights of Mavis’ golden years were spent as part of the Palmetto Porsche Club due to her love of sports cars where she was fondly known as “Grambo” and playing golf and socializing with friends at “the club” as she called it.  Sundays worshipping with the members of Palmetto Community Church.  The family is especially grateful for Loretta Scott, Janice Jackson, Marty Daniels, Roxanne Talent and Cathy Gordon who assisted the family during Mavis battle with Dimentia.

Memorials for Mavis can be made to Hospice of Charleston as well as Alzheimer’s Association.  https://act.alz.org/goto/EdandMe
