Obituary of Johnny Gelzer

Johnny Edward Gelzer, the youngest son of the late LeRoyce Gelzer Sr. and Caroline Gelzer of Summerville, SC entered into eternal rest on January 11, 2018 after his difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born October 5, 1954 in Charleston, SC. Johnny is survived by his wife of 37 years, Wanda Gelzer; son, Scott Gelzer; daughter, Cassie Gelzer; and grandson Kai Gelzer; brother, LeRoyce “Pete” Gelzer Jr.; sisters, Patricia Newlin, and Faye Rickenbaker (Steve). Johnny graduated Berkeley High School in 1972 and would later attend night classes at Charleston Southern University. On January 23, 1981, he married Wanda Gelzer and raised their two kids, Scott and Cassie in Jedburg, SC. Johnny began his career at the Navy Shipyard as a Planner and Estimator and eventually moved on to work at Charleston Water Systems up until his passing. Johnny loved life, helping others and above all spending time with his wife, children and grandson. He was a selfless and humble man with a spirited work ethic. When he wasn’t working his full time job or weekend job with Pepsi, you could often find him working on projects at home. His hobby was work. He preferred the outdoors and loved taking rides on his motorcycle. Johnny took pleasure in making the most of what he had and always lived within his means. A simple man who found joy in the simple things in life. He loved the peace and quiet in the mountains where he would take annual trips with his family to see the Fall foliage. He enjoyed ice cream, old westerns, the History Channel and learning everything he could. Johnny was a devoted husband, loving father who will be missed beyond words! On Friday January 19th visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at New Hope United Methodist Church in Summerville. Services will be held on Saturday January the 20th at 11:30 A.M. at New Hope United Methodist Church in Summerville.
