Obituary of Mary Cooney

Mary Lucy Devine Cooney, 87, passed away on Saturday, September 3 in Charleston, SC. Mary was born in Ashbrook, Roscommon, Ireland on April 29, 1929. She grew up on a farm in Ireland and came to the United States via Providence, RI at age eighteen. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen. She met her husband, William Joseph Cooney in RI and raised four children. Our family moved to Greenville, SC in 1968. Mary and her family lived in Greenville, Chattanooga, TN, Burlington, NC, and settled in Charlotte, NC. When her children grew up, Mary went to work in daycare. She cared for infants for 22 years. She had a love for babies and knitted Christmas stockings for all of her little ones over the years. She retired at the age of 82 but continued knitting and stayed active in her Catholic faith. She moved to Charleston in December 2011 and joined The Church of the Nativity on James Island. Mary loved her family, her faith, praying the Rosary, helping others, and Irish music and dance. She always had a kind word and shared a laugh. She is preceded in death by her Aunt “Mamie” Mary Agnes Murphy Fox and her beloved husband of 47 years, William Joseph Cooney. She is survived by her four children, Sean Cooney of Charlotte, NC, Sheila Elsey of Johns Island, Maureen Torres (Luis) of Charlotte, NC, and Richard Cooney(Paula) of Greensboro, NC and her grandchildren, Jennifer Torres of Charlotte, NC, Alicia Torres of Charlotte, NC, and Laura Elsey of James Island. A memorial Mass will be held at The Church of the Nativity, 1061 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412 on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Burial arrangements to be determined at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC.
