Obituary of Monica Sue Saalfeld

Monica Saalfeld entered into Eternal rest Tuesday July 1, 2014 in Charleston SC. She was born in David City, Nebraska to Alvern A. and Magdeline M. (Brecka) Hlavac on July 30, 1951. She spent her childhood on a farm near Bruno, NE later moving into David City in the eighth grade. She attended David City High School graduating in 1969. She then attended the Columbus College of Hair. She received her license and worked in David City at Connery Beauty Shop. Monica met Randy Saalfeld and they were married on June 24, 1972 at St. Mary’s church in David City, NE . Three children were born into this union Barbara Jean (1974), Vanessa Lea (1978), and Nathan Paul (1982). They resided in Schuyler till 1988 and Columbus, Nebraska where she worked for Karen’s Bridal, D & L cafeteria, Coffee Pot Cafe and for the United States Postal Service before her family ventured to South Carolina in 2001. Where she worked for the United States Postal Service till her passing. She was a member of St. Joesph church. Monica was the support and caregiver to her husband as well as her children and grandchildren. She was active in their school as well as her church. Monica is survived by her husband Randy Saalfeld, her children; daughters Barbara (Marco) Lopez and Vanessa (Kevin Pringle, fiance) Saalfeld all of Charleston; and son Nathan (Melanie) Saalfeld of Charleston; as well as her grandchildren Tiela Jensen, Brennan Jensen, Enrique Lopez, Christian Lopez, Kristina Saalfeld, Sasha Adams, Curtis Dopson and Chad Dopson. She is also survived by her mother Magdeline Hlavac of David City, NE; mother-in-law Doris Saalfeld of Grand Island, NE; brother Kevin (Lori) Hlavac of Harlan, IA; sisters Claudia Bell of Garrison, NE; Annette (Bruce) Glock of Rising City, NE; and Paula (Jamie) Sylvester of Bellwood, NE; brother-in-law Richard (Rhonda) Saalfeld of Grand Island, NE; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father Alvern A. Hlavac, father-in-law Duane Saalfeld, brother-in-laws William R. Bell; Rodney D. Saalfeld, and her grandparents Anton and Barbara Brecka and Adolph and Elsie Hlavac; Grandma-in-law Edna Saalfeld. A memorial service celebrating her life will take place on Wednesday, July 9 at 11:00AM at Simplicity Lowcountry Cremation & Burial Services (7475 Peppermill Parkway, North Charleston SC 29418).
