Obituary of Allen J. Drake

Allen Drake, son of Evard Drake and Irene (Madore) Drake, passed away on April 1, 2014 with his family by his side. Born March 27, 1928 in Washburn Maine, Allen left high school, and the farm, to enlist in the Army in 1945. After being wounded in Okinawa, he was discharged in 1947 receiving a letter of gratitude from President Truman. He was employed by the civil service as a heavy equipment operator at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine subsequently transferring to the Naval Sub Base in Groton, CT and settling in New London, CT. In 1970, Allen took early retirement from the civil service and purchased an Amerada Hess dealership in Norwich, CT which he owned until his retirement in 1991. Allen and his wife lived in New London for 50 years before moving to Ladson, South Carolina in 2013. He his survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 65 years Phyllis A (Plissey) Drake, two sons Robert A. Drake and his wife Thomasine (Nardi) Drake of Monticello, GA, and Howard C Drake and his wife Patricia (Thorme) Drake of Madison CT and daughter Georjana R. Drake and her husband Phillip S. Drake (Oudkerk) of Summerville SC. He is also survived by three grandchildren Casey A Drake of Madison CT, Sean A. Drake and Joshua A. Drake of Summerville, SC. He was predeceased by his son John E. Drake of Yucca Valley CA. Allen was a past Deacon and member of First Baptist Church of New London, CT and a past member of the Masonic Lodge of Washburn, ME. After retirement, Allen enjoyed fishing in Stuart, FL as well as many years of travel with Phyllis visiting 43 states and 20 countries. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the City (First Baptist Church) New London, CT. On Friday, April 11 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
