Leon King, Jr.

Obituary of Leon Fleming King, Jr.

Leon Fleming King, Jr., devoted husband and father, and long-time resident of Summerville, SC, passed away on June 4, 2019.

Leon was born November 14, 1940 in Hopewell, VA, and grew up in Mobile, AL and New Orleans, LA. He entered the Navy after high school and earned degrees in engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1965 and Naval Postgraduate School in 1975. He married Lee Ellen Wright on March 19, 1966, and together they raised two sons, Christopher and Matthew, and a daughter Kathryn.

Leon served in the submarine force his entire Navy career, including attack boats during Vietnam and ballistic missile subs throughout the Cold War. He was the Commanding Officer of U.S.S. Simon Bolivar from 1980 to 1984. His career concluded with tours as Commanding Officer of submarine facilities and training schools in Holy Loch, Scotland, Charleston, SC and Dam Neck, VA.

Leon loved being outdoors. He was happiest when cycling, kayaking, camping, boating, or practicing photography with his friends and family. Loved for his serious mind, sharp wit, and dry humor, Leon could share deep thoughts or even tell a good joke with just a few words, usually over a cup of coffee with his friends.

Leon was preceded in death by his father, Leon Sr., his mother, Kathryn, and his brother James. He is survived by his wife Lee Ellen, their three children Christopher, Matthew, and Kathryn, his sisters Miriam and Laurie, and his brother Stagg.
