Obituary of Carolyn Alyce Newkirk

Carolyn Alyce Newkirk, age 70, died July 17, 2013 at the Hospice Center of Charleston. She is preceded in death by her parents John Russell Newkirk Air Force LT COL retired, Alyce Wheeler Newkirk and brother John Russell Newkirk. Carolyn is survived by Linda Gwillim her life partner of 22 years and her three children; daughter Lauri Newkirk Paggi, son-in-law William Paggi of Charleston, SC daughter Alycia Newkirk of Beaufort, SC, son Clayton Newkirk, daughter-in-law Susan Newkirk of Huntsville, AL. She has four grandchildren; Nichole Burt, Dax Burt, Cameron Newkirk and Austin Newkirk and three great grand children; Hannah Meyer, Sailor Fralix and Dax Burt Jr. Carolyn had a 35 year career as director of sales and marketing in the hotel and resort industry including major resorts in the southeast and as vice-president and account supervisor in advertising for resort and conference centers nationwide. She was a political activist throughout her life and had strong anti-war beliefs, worked for women’s rights, abortion rights and gay rights. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, was an avid reader, gardener, loved traveling, visiting art museums, watching movies, attending live theater and had a special love for cats. Carolyn deeply loved her family and we returned that love, we will miss her.
