David Tompkins

Obituary of David George Tompkins

David George Tompkins b. 7/31/40, Co. Durham, England. Son of ‘Ted’ and ‘Madge’ Tompkins. d.5/24/13, Charleston S.C. USA. A proud Englishman who loved the American Way and chose to make his home here. Hard work and ambition took him from the coal mines of northern England, via the merchant navy, the oil industry and manufacturing to become Director of Engineering at the Charleston Harbor Resort. He lived and worked in; Alaska, Norway, the Middle East, Africa, New York, the Bahamas, Bermuda and Louisiana. A student of Churchill he went fishing with US Presidents. A ‘fixer of stuff’ he filed his own patents. He abhorred laziness but was always ready to help others to turn an honest buck. David was as happy ‘cruising’ in his sport car and eating crab legs, as he was visiting the beach in his Landrover and eating fish and chips. Dedicated to his family he will continue to be loved always by; wife Erica, daughters Alexis and Heather, grandchildren Kaleigh and Noah David, his family in England; Alastair, Rachel, George and Peter as well as an extended family of innumerable friends from across the globe and the years. Above all he loved life and relished a great debate. Memorial & Visiting: Tuesday 5/28.
