Mary McKie

Obituary of Mary McKie

Mary Lea McCormick McKie, “Mickie McKie,” was truly one of a kind! She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, Sunday school teacher, neighbor and friend. She had a spunk and a zest for life that was contagious. She enjoyed spending time with her family, her “sisters”, and loved her grandchildren more than life. Mickie was a servant leader in her church, a Sunday school teacher for over 50 years, and a pillar of support and encouragement at Magnolia Assisted Living where she established a ministry 15 years ago. Mickie’s parents were Lucy and Jack Floyd and Rufus and Lois Padgett of the Brooklet/Stilson, GA community. Her sister, Bette Brinson, also lived in Brooklet. Mickie was married to Harry Dale McCormick until his death in 1974 and had two children, Dale McCormick Williams and John Patrick McCormick. She married Charles Howard McKie on October 17, 1979. To start their life together, they moved to Folly Beach and spread their warmth and friendship to people they met while running the Scottie Drug store on King Street. Charleston has been their home for the past 38 years, and she shared her love for her city with everyone she knew. She took pleasure in trips to the Folly Beach Pier, dinner at Hymans, lunch at Olde Towne Grill, and an afternoon stroll through the Market. As a true southern gentleman, Charles treated Mickie like his princess. He brought her coffee with fresh strawberries in the mornings, opened her doors with a smile always extending his hand to help her out, and took her to Belk’s to buy a new dress as often as she liked. Whether they were sitting at the Battery feeding the birds, traveling to the mountains of Gatlinburg, or visiting with friends in their garage, they were always happy and content. Their relationship was full of love, warmth and adoration. Mickie and Charles, called Mick Mick and Charleston by their grandkids, were surrounded in love by family. Mickie’s children and their spouses are Dale McCormick Williams and Doug Williams, Patrick and Gail McCormick, Michelle and Rob Fields, Charles and Trish McKie. Her grandchildren are Kimberly and Zack Otey, Jennifer and Jason Harkey, Christopher and Lauren Williams, Scott and Tammy McCormick, Brandon and Amber McCormick, Lean and Chris Gaskin, Katie Pearson, Ben Pearson, Chelsea and Trey McRay, Conner McKie, and Carson McKie. Mick Mick had 13 great grandchildren who kept the sparkle in her eyes. She will be missed but her legacy and her spirit will be present always. Visitation will be held at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Friday, October 27, 2017 at 11. Celebration of life will begin at 12. Flowers are welcome.
