Obituary of William Hoffman

William “Bill” Harry Hoffman, 83, of Goose Creek, SC, passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at his home after a long illness. Bill was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on April 3, 1934, to the late Vicka Elizabeth and the late William Peter Hoffman. He grew up in Fond du Lac and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954. He married Virginia “Ginny” Marggraf in 1958. Bill and Ginny experienced the world together adventuring to various duty stations. He retired from military service in 1974 to Waldorf, Maryland where, with his loving and devoted wife, they raised their family. In 1990 they relocated to St. Augustine, FL. In 2015 they moved to Goose Creek, SC. Bill achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer during his twenty years of Naval service. After his military career he continued to serve his country as a federal civil servant working as a Program Analyst for fifteen years. Bill was known for his good humor and his desire to help his neighbors whenever needed. He loved his English Bulldogs and his Harley Davidson motorcycles; and, yes, he enjoyed a cold beer and grill-out on a warm day. Bill Hoffman was a devoted husband, father and proud American. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Dawn Hoffman, five children: William P. Hoffman (Rebecca); Dawn H. Gibbs (Paul); Donna H. Magel (Steve); James C. Hoffman (Christiana); Glen R. Hoffman (Tiffany); Grandchildren, Sharon Reynolds (Dave); Shawn Hoffman; Victoria Hoffman; William H. Hoffman (Cathy); Joel Hoffman; Parker and Mason Hoffman; Jameson and Macie Hoffman; Step-grandchildren Jefferson “Tommy” Wickens (Jennifer); Kristy Wickens; and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin sister Margaret Hoffman Elwing. He was pre-deceased by his three sisters, Delores, Betty, and Jeanette. In lieu of flowers, and in recognition of Bill’s military service and his love of animals, contributions in his name may be made to the Fisher House Foundation (https://www.fisherhouse.org/) or the Best Friends Animal Society (https://bestfriends.org). There will be a memorial service on Monday, October 9, 2017, at 11:00, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 206 Central Ave., Summerville, SC 29483, 843-873-2652.
