Obituary of Charles Herbert Houck

Senior Master Sergeant Charles Herbert “Herbie” Houck, USAF, RET, 74, of Goose Creek, South Carolina departed this earth for his heavenly home on July 21, 2017 at Colleton County Medical Center Walterboro, South Carolina following a lengthy illness. He was born on April 9, 1943 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina to the late Orin and Eva (Wilcox) Houck. Herbie was a proud Veteran with service in Vietnam and several stateside bases. Herbie enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1965 following two years in the United States Army. After competing basic and technical training, he was assigned to the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron in Myrtle Beach as a F100 Crew Chief where he began his career. Herbie retired from the Air Force in 1995 after 33 years of faithful and honorable service. Following his retirement, Herbie spent his days as a school bus driver for Berkeley County. This was a job he loved. Herbie was well read and held degrees in both Nursing Science and AFCT Maintenance Technology. He also held a license in FAA Airframe /Power plant operations. When he was not working, Herbie enjoyed relaxing by watching NASCAR, and riding his Harley. He was a man that was strong in his Christian Faith and was a serving member of the First Baptist Church of Jedburg for over 28 years. He was a member of the Crossroads Motorcycle Ministries, and a Shriner. He will be missed by those he loved and those that loved him. Herbie is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 40 years, Betty Houck, a son: Kenny Babcock, daughters: Patty Zerbst (Jay), Sheri Sims (Darrell), grandchildren: Stephanie Rivers (Lee), Zachary Zerbst, Katlyn Zerbst, and Brooklyn Babcock, Peyton Childers, Levi Sims and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother James Houck (Evelyn) and many nieces nephews and cousins that will treasure his memory. He was preceded in death by a sister Pauline Wadell and a brother J.D. Houck. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Jedburg, 121 Brewer Road, Summerville, SC 29483 on Monday, July 24, 2017 from 11:30 AM until 1 PM. Funeral services will follow the family visitation with Reverend Larry Goad officiating. A private interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Jedburg in his honor
