Obituary of David Newton Hoffman

David Newton Hoffman Jr., 65, of Summerville, passed away peacefully at home Friday, July 14, 2017. He was born October 23, 1951 in Summerville, a son of the late David Newton Hoffman Sr. and Betty Knight Hoffman. He was a loving husband, father and papap. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Gail Lewis Hoffman, 4 children; Lisha Hoffman Brown (Mitchell), David Travis Hoffman (Shelly), Tina H. Asher, and David Newton (Trey) Hoffman III (Kim). 5 grandchildren; Makenzie Elaine Hoffman, Kohl David Hoffman, Joshua Wade Asher, Tanner David-Michael Vega, and Trentin Antonio Vega. 1 brother and 3 sisters; Emerson Hoffman (Marcia), Paulette Patrick (Collins), Patti Campbell (Carnel) and Phyllis Floyd (Maynard) as well as numerous other family members. David retired from Merita Bread Company after 33 years. He then worked 12 years as a Business Agent for BCTGM International Union. He chose to live a simple life. He worked extremely hard, and would give anyone the shirt off of his back. He was in the FFA and 4H as well as a bus driver at Summerville High School where he graduated in 1970. He coached football & baseball to thousands of boys in his lifetime before deciding to become an umpire. His umpiring career started at Parks field and ended 40 Years later calling more than 4000 games including several Division II College World Series. He was the past President of the Lowcountry Umpires Association. In 2014, David was honored to be entered into the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame, which was the first time an umpire had ever received such an award. He also was co owner of Palmetto Deer processing in Moncks Corner. As his health started failing he chose a different path to keep himself busy. He grew up on a farm so it was easy to envision himself having a little open-air market. He always had a garden, so a bigger one was not such a big deal. He poured his heart and pride into his garden. Sharing it with family and friends. David was a member of Crossroads Community Church where he had an abundance of friends. David’s Memorial Service will be on July 23, 2017 at 3:00 PM at Crossroads Community Church, 505 Gahagan Road, Summerville 29485. The family will receive friends at 2:00 until the service time. Memorial donations may be made to missions fund at Crossroads Community Church or Chance Pent Fund.
