I was very saddened to learn of the passing of my friend Steve.
To those that knew him, Steve was a true and unselfish friend.
He was passionate about sports, politics, and music.
Steve loved college sports. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and Steve dearly loved his Crimson Tide. But Steve enjoyed all college sports and thoroughly enjoyed watching great competition. If you ever watched a college football game with Steve, chances were that he knew (no matter who was playing) something about the coach, the players, how they did last year, and so forth. You always got a little bit of an education when you watched a ball game with Steve.
In politics, Steve was a proud progressive. At the age of 19, he represented the Alabama Democratic Party as a delegate to the 1972 National Democratic Convention. He went on to participate in many political campaigns in the 70’s & 80’s. I remember him talking fondly about his participation in the presidential campaign of Ted Kennedy.
Steve was also a huge supporter of Civil Rights. He participated in many Civil Rights Marches in the 60’s & 70’s and encouraged African Americans to get involved in the political process.
And he loved his Blues. And above all he loved The Allman Brothers. He had the opportunity to see the band on numerous occasions and to meet them as well.
But most important, Steve was a good friend to his friends. He always had time for his friends and he was always willing to share what he had.
Steve will be greatly missed.
