Obituary of Matthew Hanagriff

Matthew J. Hanagriff passed away at his home on Tuesday August 11, after a long battle with cancer.

Matthew was born August 28,1955 in Charleston, SC, the middle of 7 children. He was a lifelong resident of North Charleston.

Matthew graduated from North Charleston High School in 1973. He proceeded to go to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard as an electrician. He stayed with the shipyard until it closed.  He worked Civil Service at the Charleston Air Force Base until he would have to be transferred out of state to remain. He chose to leave Civil Service because he wanted to have a hands-on relationship with his children. He then went to work with the Charleston County School District as an electrician until he retired in 2017.

Matthew was a sportsman from a very young age. He fished with his father and grandfather in both salt and fresh waters in the area. A love he continued with his children and wife until a few months ago. He participated in numerous charitable Fishing Tournaments over the years with many trophies to show for it. He dove hunted in North and South Carolina. Matthew was also an avid shooter, enjoying hours at the range with family and friends. Matthew really enjoyed being a father and grandfather.  Teaching his children different lessons, never missing one of their sporting events and watching them grow into wonderful adults.

Matthew married his wife Deann in 2010 after 5 years of being together.  They shared a love of fishing, shooting, classic cars, street rods, all types of auto racing (especially Formula 1) and just spending time together.  They also shared an incredible love of his children and grandchildren.  He was fortunate to live to see his newest granddaughter Fiona born just a week before his passing. He was blessed to Facetime with his daughter and granddaughter.

In addition to his wife Deann Huebner of North Charleston, Matthew is survived by his children, Joshua Hanagriff (Carrie) of Montville, Maine, Carissa Juengst (Dave) of Boston, MA and Lucas Hanagriff of North Charleston.

Three grandchildren, Wade Juengst, Fiona Juengst and Georgia Hanagriff. Five brothers and sisters, Christine Smith (Joe) of Ellijay, GA, Larry Hanagriff (DeeDee) of Jacksonville, FL, Marguerite "Feetie" Jones (Ray) of Gulf Breeze, FL, Kay Hyman (Phillip) of North Charleston and Mike Hanagriff (Angie) of Atlanta, GA. Numerous nieces, nephews and his beloved pets.  He was predeceased by his father Marion L. Hanagriff, mother Georgiana Rowston Hanagriff and sister Dale Fedele of Charlotte, NC.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Matthew later in the year so that family can travel safely.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
