Donald Tipton

Obituary of Donald L Tipton

Donald Lloyd Tipton, age 86, died on May 2, 2018, at his home on Edisto Beach, SC.

Don is survived by his wife, Ida Tipton; his children, Donna Tipton of Roanoke VA, Charlotte Ferguson (Billy) of Salem VA, Rob Tipton (Meredith) of Hilton Head SC, stepdaughter Tabitha Wooten of Crothersville IN; his grandchildren Marilee Mason (Donna), Christopher Ferguson and Matthew Ferguson (Charlotte), Lillie, Harrison, Madeleine, Sophie, Stella, Lila, Leo (Rob), Kelli, Blake, and great Jayce (Tabitha).

Don was born on December 1931 in Portland, Oregon to parents Harold Tipton and Hazel Aileene Overbaugh. He graduated from University of Oregon where he was in the ROTC and entered the service as an officer in the Air Force where he received a National Defense Service Medal.  He returned home and worked in management at Goodyear, HO Canfield, Pantasote, Holm Industries, before retiring from Standard Products.

He was a member of the Edisto Beach Baptist Church and everyone remembers when asked what church he belonged he would reply, “I am a Christian attending the Edisto Beach Baptist Church”.  He served as Chairman of the Deacons, Trustee, Chairman of Building and Grounds, and Usher.  In the community of Edisto Beach he served as the first chairman of the Tree Commission, and served on the ATAX board.

Don was a great family man and father wanting to share the world and God with his children. He married Mary Lee Haynes on October 27, 1956 and the couple had their three children together, spending their time active in traveling on vacations abroad and large family vacations on Edisto Beach where he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life.

Don was not a social active man but was deeply involved in church and community for the majority of his later life. He enjoyed his home and studying the word of God.   His children will always remember his detail planned itineraries for his trips.  For example the Munich Germany (where his blood line came from) the itinerary started with all going and then a bible verse.  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.  1 Corinthians 10:31.  This was followed by the detail itinerary of every day and activity.

The family would like to thank Charlene Gladden, his caregiver the last month of his life, for the love she shown with his care.  Words cannot express our appreciation for all that was done for Don and us from Amedisys Hospice and Simplicity Lowcountry Cremation & Burial Service who provided outstanding care and support to the family.  God Bless you and each one of your professional staff.  Especially thank Simplicity’s staff for the draped gurney as Don was removed from his home.  Made a great impression to everyone and meant so much to the children.
