Obituary of Hattie Poole Iler

Hattie Poole Iler, 104, of Summerville, SC passed away December 31, 2020.  She was born September 2, 1916 in Greenville, South Carolina to John Arthur Poole, Sr. and Effie (Ballew) Poole. 

Hattie was the second of Arthur and Effie Poole’s six children.  She lived many of her formative years at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood, SC after her mother’s unexpected death in 1923.  Hattie graduated from Greenville High School in 1933, and shortly thereafter met her handsome future husband, Roy.  She and Roy married in 1937 and were married 67 years until his passing in 2004.  Together, Hattie and Roy lived long and active lives, and Hattie worked alongside Roy in his dry cleaning business for many years.  She was a longtime member of Overbrook Baptist Church and Silver Threads, which reflected her genuine faith in God.  Hattie will always be remembered for her grace, kindness, beauty, and love for her family.  She was an avid recycler before the term “reuse/recycle” regained popularity.

Services for Hattie will be delayed due to Covid-19.  When the time is right and it is safe to gather, the family hopes to have a memorial service to honor her life.  Hattie’s final resting place will be beside her husband, Roy, in Greenville, SC.

Hattie is survived by daughters Genie Iler Hill of Ladson, SC, and Judy Iler Conte (John) of Wherwell, England; Granddaughters Annette Hill and Mary Horres of Goose Creek, SC; Teri Hill of Lakewood, CO; Grandson Matt Spencer (Jennifer) of Greer, SC; one Great-Granddaughter, Jenna Hyland (Chris) of Lakewood, CO; and many nieces and nephews and their extended families.  Hattie’s family would like to sincerely thank all of the wonderful friends, neighbors, caregivers — all of whom loved her and she loved in return — especially in the last chapter of her life.
