Dorothy Driggers

Obituary of Dorothy Smoak Driggers

Dorothy (Dot) Smoak Driggers, age 94, died on April 6, 2021 in Summerville, SC.  Born September 20, 1926, Dorothy was the daughter of Viola Antley Smoak and William Smoak.  Dorothy grew up between Rowesville and Branchville, SC; she graduated from Orangeburg High School.

Dot moved to North Charleston in 1943 and worked in bookkeeping at the Charleston Naval Shipyard.  She later worked at Manhattan Shirt Factory.

Dot married David M. Driggers, Sr. in 1951.  She was involved at Cooper River Baptist church, neighborhood garden club (served as president), and took extreme pride in designing, decorating, and maintaining two beautiful homes and yards in the Park Circle area.  Her high energy, talent, and creativity are evidenced by her fantastic cooking, baking, decorating, and hosting numerous baby and wedding showers, receptions, and dinners; crocheting; flower arranging; ceramics making; sewing, etc.  She was always available to nurse sick family and friends; she provided unending emotional and physical support to family and friends during difficult times.

Dot lived at The Bridge Assisted Living from fall 2007 to spring 2014; she lived at White Oak Manor--Charleston until two days before her death.  We are eternally grateful for the many caring staff members at both facilities who did so much for Dot as her body and mind began to fail.

Dot was predeceased by her husband; parents; two sisters--Jackie Fersner and Mary Dorman; four half-sisters--Jennie Tidwell, Georgia Hamilton, Daisy (Tootsie) Ward, and Leila Gray; and four half-brothers--Cecil Smoak, Francis Smoak, Lewis Smoak, and Alton Smoak.  Dot is survived by her daughter Sandra Driggers Senterfeit (Glen) of James Island and son David M. Driggers, Jr. of Goose Creek.  A private burial was held at Carolina Memorial Gardens, North Charleston on April 9, 2021.
