Obituary of Nancy Smith Madill

Nancy Smith Madill, aged 74, has passed away at the Lowcountry Community Hospice House of Agape Care in Summerville, SC on March 7, 2022. Nancy is survived by her husband of 30 years, Jeff Madill, her step daughter Wendy Madill of Atlanta GA, her brothers, Sidney Smith of Leland, NC and Charles Smith of Macon, GA, and her wire haired dachshund, BB King.

Nancy was born in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on March 9,1947 and followed her Navy dad to many coastal locations in her childhood, including time in Charleston when the big bridge was narrow and when her first brother was born. Her family settled in Macon, GA and after college, Nancy made her way to Atlanta, GA.

Nancy graduated from Georgia Southern University with a degree in English and had a voracious habit of reading good books, an ear for great music, and an appreciation for wonderful old movies. She has tried her hand at teaching, social work, numerous temporary assignments, and eventually turned to art including jewelry, pottery, sculpture, water color, and finally to abstract expressionist oil painting. She loved color as much as she loved books and music, and she loved her (used) 1998 Jaguar XK8 convertible as well as a long and mixed series of dogs named after favorite musicians and movie stars.

Nancy was a fantastic cook with an appreciation of the best restaurants. Travel was also a passion with many anniversary trips to Cumberland Island in Georgia as well as trips to Jekyll and St. Simons islands. Gourmet magazine introduced Nancy to Charleston as a travel and dining destination for another memorable anniversary and began her eventual downsize plan to be living near the coast.

Nancy has been an ardent supporter of missions of the United Methodist Church, including time as co-president of the United Methodist Women and facilitator of Disciple courses at Johns Creek UMC, as well as supplying and serving meals during her time at Bethany UMC. She was an active member of the Alpharetta (Georgia) Garden Club, and most recently, Nancy joined the South Carolina Master Gardener program and was excited to be doing the volunteer work required of a Master Gardener. She ain’t got no time to die.

Nancy’s ashes will be interred at Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville, SC. The family will celebrate her life in a memorial service there on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at noon which will be live-streamed at www.bethany-umc.com for anyone that cannot attend.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to www.wellspringliving.org which Nancy supported with all her heart.
