Leola James

Obituary of Leola Ellen James

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Leola Ellen James on April 3, 2022, in Huger, SC. A lifelong Charleston resident, she worked for Lockheed Martin until her retirement in 1992. She dedicated her life to her family and friends, never losing touch with her school friends, the self-titled “Dirty Dozen,” and caring for first her niece and nephew, Leigh and Joe, and later her great nieces: Leisa, Megan, and Erin. Always a child at heart, she loved to laugh and “cut-up,” loved all animals, and never met a stranger she couldn’t turn into a friend. As an active member of Citadel Square Baptist Church, she spent many years teaching Sunday school to children grades K-12. Leola spent her life devoted to her faith and shared her love with everyone she met.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lena James, brother, Osbourne James, nephew-in law, Donald Vaughn Jr., and brother-in-law, Rev. Gerald Josey. She is survived by her sister, Jean Josey, niece Leigh Vaughn, nephew Joseph Josey, great nieces Leisa Vaughn, Megan Vaughn, and Erin Griswold (Austin), and her beloved great-great-nephew JJ Griswold.  She will be deeply missed.

Graveside services will be held Friday, April 8, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Roper Hospital Hospice or The Alzheimer’s Association.
