Obituary of Sandra Lee Mizner

Our hearts are broken, but the heavenly host is rejoicing mightily that Sandra Mizner has joined Him in the kingdom of heaven. Our dear mother, wife, grandmother, sister and extraordinarily special friend departed this earth on Monday, March 14th, 2016 while at home with her husband of 52 years Charles and surrounded by their three children and love. No one who knew Sandy will ever be the same, and for that , we are all profoundly grateful. She has made everyone she touched a better person. Sandy was born to Clarence and Ethel Moody Burton on December 06, 1939 in Williamson, West Virginia. Sandy had many great accomplishments. She graduated in 1957 from Williamson High School and went on to graduate from the National Business College in Roanoke, Virginia and the Navy’s Middle Management Institute. She then raced on to countless successful organizations, always endeavoring to mentor and lift up those around her. Sandy’s personality and boundless energy inspires members to accept the challenge within that organization. Her poise and self-assurance coupled with her willing, cheerful and can-do attitude made her an invaluable asset to all. She retired from Civil Service in 1995 having served as Deputy Equal Employment Opportunity Office in the HR Department with over 33 years of service. While working she was also very active in her church, Smyrna United Methodist as church council chairperson and sang in the choir. Before the dreaded disease of Alzheimer’s took over she was involved in many community activities: Roper Hospital- Auxiliary President, member of SC Association of hospital auxiliaries, President and Vice President of Mended Hearts Chapter #266, was an accredited heart visitor for Mended Hearts and served as Assistant Regional Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region of Mended Hearts. She also participated in every heart walk until she could no longer walk and served as volunteer for the Dear Neighbors campaign. Eastern Star– she was a past matron of Charleston Chapter #56. Beta Sigma Phi Sorority–she was a past President of both her chapter and council, she served all offices at one point in time, she co-chaired the sorority’s convention in Charleston and she was Beta Sigma Phi “Woman of the Year” numerous times. She also was 50+ member, something not many accomplished. Federally Employed Women- she was passed President of FEW Charleston Chapter #93, won the Woman Fest Crystal Cup Award and served on the National Cultural Awareness committee for the Lyle Scholarship. Harbortown International- she was charter President and delegate and secretary Council V Blue Ridge Region and was past president for the Charleston Area EEO Council. Along with all these activities she somehow found time to institute an “Adopt a Grandparent” program in local nursing homes, serve on the Trident United Way Allocation Board, serve the Pimlico Civic Club and Seniors Club, volunteer with the March of Dimes and American Cancer Society, always helping her grandson with his baseball fundraisers, past president of the AFJROTC Booster association at Berkeley High School as well as serve as a business partner and science fair judge. While accomplishing all this she still managed to be chaperone to all her daughter’s athletic team events. Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ethel Burton and her only brother James Burton. Sandy has moved on ahead of her loved ones- her loving and devoted husband of 52 years Charles, three children: Michele Lawson (Jeff) of Goose Creek, John Mizner(Shannon) of Summerville and Sean Mizner(Marcy) of Moncks Corner. She has six grandchildren: Tyler Buskirk, Jordan Buskirk, Ashleigh Mizner, Ethan Mizner, Shylar Mizner(deceased) and Connor Mizner. We know you are at peace now and you will be forever loved and missed. A visitation for Sandy Mizner will be Friday March 18th, 2016 from 5-8pm at Simplicity Lowcountry Cremation & Burial Services, Inc. (7475 Peppermill Parkway, Suite E, North Charleston, SC 29418). The funeral services will be held at Freedom Church (1425 Cypress Gardens Road, Moncks Corner, SC 29461) on Saturday March 19th, 2016 at 3:00pm. Immediately following the service, burial will be held at Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery (724 Cypress Gardens Road, Moncks Corner, SC 29461). Memorials may be made to Smyrna United Methodist Church or Roper Hospice Association.
