What can you say when a dear loved one leaves us? It is a tragedy beyond words. Al was kind, loving, sweet, generous, extremely smart and witty – a man who was “larger than life” who collected friends, was infinitely kind and generous, and a good friend to all who knew him. Al is still here, though. He is in the garden plants that he loved so much; he is in the mischievous spirit of his kitty cats whom he adored, he is in the smiles and hugs of all the friends and family who have been so kind and supportive. Al’s spirit surrounds his humble home which brought him great joy and pride, and in all the things he touched. Al was a ‘Jack of all trades” and a master of all. Al had overcome many hardships in his life and, I think, was enjoying life to fullest when he was sadly and suddenly taken from us Friday, Feb. 9. I believe Al was called for some greater purpose that we cannot question. He offered so much.
It was a tremendous joy knowing Al for eight years, and of all people, he would not want any of us to be sad, but to be joyous knowing he is off for another great adventure. He leaves us with such wonderful and treasured memories; those of a person who was like no other.
Al wished for his ashes to be placed in Eleuthera, Bahamas, a place he truly loved. He will be surround by what I call, “God’s Best Work” – the beautiful clear turquoise water that teems with life and provides sustenance for our very lives. It is fitting that a person, so full of life himself, will eternally be where God’s talents are the best – in the millions of twinkly stars in the clear night sky, diamonds that turn the surface of sea into blinding sparkling crystals at noontime, flowers and plants of such impressive color and shape and form that they don’t even seem real, and in the sea shells that Al delighted in picking up off the pink sand. I cannot express how much I miss Al – it is incomprehensible that he is gone.
I extend to Al this very simple little heartfelt phrase:
” ”Twas wonderful while you were here.” – With dearest love, Laura
