Obituary of Mary Wooten Graves

On January 31, 2016 Mary Wooten Graves, a child of God, returned to her Maker. She died peacefully after a long and active life, leaving behind her son, Dr. Thomas Durrette Wooten, Jr., three grandchildren, Elizabeth W. Burwell (Oliver), T. Durrette Wooten (Keri) and Dr. Caroline F. Wooten, and two great grand-sons, Jack and Wooten Burwell and one great granddaughter, Ellison Dubose Wooten. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Thomas Durrette Wooten, Sr. in 1957 and later married Lawrence Graves who also predeceased her in 2004. Mary, born on August 18, 1916 in Parler, South Carolina was one of four children born to David Carlisle Felder, Sr. and Beulah Dukes Felder. Mary loved God’s creation and especially her dogs, wildlife and gardening. A retired teacher, she touched the lives of hundreds of children at Satchel Ford Elementary who she inspired to love reading, writing and arithmetic. She also loved her church, St. Michael’s Episcopal in Columbia, where she remained active until moving to her Son’s home on John’s Island due to health concerns. Family will receive visitors at 2561 Royal Oak Drive on Johns Island on Thursday, February 4th following a memorial service to be held at Rockville Presbyterian Church on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina at 2:30 PM. Memorials may be made to The Charleston Animal Society.
