Obituary of Marisa Scavo

Marisa Scavo, 70, of Bluffton, SC, passed away December 18, 2023, after a short battle with cancer.

Recently celebrating fifty years of marriage, Marisa leaves behind her loving husband, Sabino (Sam) Scavo. They married in 1973 and lived together in the Chicago, IL area the majority of her life before moving to Bluffton two years ago. Marisa is survived by her twin children, Marc (Gretchen) Scavo and Simone (Ryan) Petronio, and her four grandchildren, Mateo Scavo, Clara Scavo, Layla Petronio, and Luca Petronio.

Marisa was born to the late Vito and Maria Ferruggio, March 18, 1953, in Bari, Italy. She will be missed by her brother Joe Ferruggio, and sister Domenica Giannola, as well as beloved nephews, nieces, brother in-laws, sisters-in-laws, and dear friends.

Marisa will be remembered for her creative talent. After graduating from college, she began a long career as a business owner, owning a floral shop for 25 years in Wheaton, IL. She was an artist, a florist, a gardener, a knitter, a jewelry-maker, a baker… a true creator in every way. She found comfort and pride in expressing her creative ability.

She also loved the beach, cozy mysteries, reading, learning, and collecting. She was strong-willed and bold, recently telling a friend that she considered herself a ‘maximalist’. Very true in many ways. Her family is comforted to believe she is now at peace, and picture her already painting the clouds up above.

A private memorial will be held in Charlotte, NC in the new year. In lieu of sending flowers, the family would encourage donations be made to Hospice Care of the Low Country, hospicecarelc.org/donate. They were incredibly supportive and kind during Marisa’s final days.
