John Franklin Sowell Jr., beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, departed from this world on January 27, 2024, at the Veterans Victory House. Born on February 25, 1943, in Aiken, SC, he was the cherished son of the late John F. Sowell Sr. and Ruby Jordan. John leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his family.

John is survived by his two daughters, Kimberly Joy Emerson and Christine Lou Doris Furr, and son, Todd Michael Sowell, as well as his adored grandchildren, Justin Wayne Urick, Kurstin Furr Perkins, Samuel Paul Emerson, and Mary Kathryn Emerson. His great-grandchild, Paisley JoAnne Fike, continues to be a living testament to the joy he brought to the family.

A proud patriot, John dedicated over eleven years of his life to serving his country in the United States Navy and Air Force Reserves. One of the defining moments in his military career was his significant contribution to a submarine rescue mission. Following his service, John transitioned into the role of a security officer, lending his skills to various organizations, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Kiawah Island Resort, Kershaw Medical Center, and Haier America Manufacturing, where he eventually retired.

A devout Christian, John found solace and purpose in his faith, actively participating in the Men's Ministry at First Baptist of Camden as well as Crowfield Baptist Church in Goose Creek, SC. John offered his services as a volunteer for Kairos Prison Ministry, a Christian nonprofit that ministers to the spiritual needs of the incarcerated. He was a man of the outdoors, finding joy in hunting, fishing, and cultivating his garden. An avid sports enthusiast, John's passion extended to football, baseball, basketball, and NASCAR, with a special allegiance to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

A celebration of John Sowell's life will take place on Monday, February 5, 2024, at Crowfield Baptist Church (100 Hunters Ln, Goose Creek, S.C., 29445). The service will commence at 5:00 pm.
