Patricia Denning Courtney

June 28, 1936 – February 15, 2024

Patricia (Patty) Courtney, 87, passed away peacefully at her home in Goose Creek, SC under the loving care of her family and the support of Intrepid Hospice. She is survived by daughters Jenna (Bill) Carpenter of Goose Creek, SC, Cindy Goforth of Gastonia, NC and Ann (Tom) Hammond of Saluda, SC and by sons Roy (Dona) Goforth of Clover, SC, Jim Courtney (Luana) of Hanahan, SC, and Alan (Lisa) Courtney of Waynesville, NC.

Patty will be remembered most for her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (at age 9) and exhibiting the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23): love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. She had an infectious smile and was known for being a kind, gentle, humble person and always showing grace and mercy to all. Some of her favorite activities of years gone by were singing in the church choir, bowling, playing games (especially at the senior center), reading, gardening, bird watching (squirrels/deer also), and of course, her nightly routine of watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. The thing she enjoyed the most was spending time with family, especially her great grandchildren, where she was known for passing out peppermints and lemon cookies. She had numerous jobs over her lifetime but the one that gave her the most fulfilment and satisfaction was working as a caregiver for Home Instead (until she was in her 70’s).

She is also survived by her grandchildren, who include Sarah (Heath) Caldwell of Goose Creek, SC, Hannah (Patrick) Buhler of Hanahan, SC, Emily (Matt) Mullinax of Summerville, SC, Caitlin (Nick) Long of Durham, NC, Abigail (Samuel) Dye of Charlotte, NC, Mary-Madison (Micah) Robbins of Charlotte, NC, Kennedy O’Neil Goforth of Farmington, PA, Kendall Courtney of Hendersonville, NC, Stewart Courtney of West Columbia, SC, Shawnna (David) Chance of Alvin, SC, Sherri (Jonathan) Purdy of Bonneau Beach, SC, Jamie Courtney of Pendleton, SC, and Jillian Courtney of Pendleton, SC. She also has eleven great- grandchildren, with several more on the way. Patty was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Pearl Denning of Benson, NC, and her sister, Jerre Boren, of Elkin, NC.

She will be forever missed by all those who knew her, but we are comforted by the fact she is in heaven with her Lord Jesus Christ and that we will be together again soon.

Her memorial service will be Saturday, February 24th at 11 am, at Northwood Baptist Church, 2200 Greenridge Rd, North Charleston, SC, 29406. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Northwood Baptist Church Missions Fund located at the above address.
