Obituary of Gregory Charles Sumpter

Gregory Charles Sumpter, son of the late Nathaniel C. and Muriel A. (Peniston) Sumpter, was born September 25, 1947 in Manhattan, New York. Mr. Sumpter departed this life on March 3, 2024.

He was educated in the Charleston County Schools and a graduate of Charles A. Brown High School, class of 1965. After graduating high school, Gregory entered the Air Force and served for Four years. At an early, he became a member of St. Luke A. M. E. Church at St. Phillip Street, Charleston, South Carolina.

Gregory entered military service in January 1966 in South Carolina as a jet engine mechanic and served in Columbus, Taiwan and Guam before completing his military duty. After separation, Gregory was employed by Columbus & Greenville railway, the railroad company in Mississippi.

Gregory later returned to South Carolina in 1974 where he began working for South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE&G) until his retirement. He became a member of the Thunderguards Motorcycle Club and actively worked to establish the charter for the Charleston Chapter.

He leaves to mourn his passing, two daughters: Wanda Sumpter, Tallahassee, FL; Tamejra Sumpter (Tomlinson) Ft. Lauderdale FL; former wife, Dr. Luretha Sumpter; one sister, Dianne (Scudder) Sumpter, North Charleston, SC; five grandchildren: Jiordyn Sumpter, Ashton and Michael Roundtree, Kingston and Empress Tomlinson; Nephews: Pierce Simon, Russel Scudder, and Carl Terrance DeSaussure; one niece, Sajai DeSaussure, and a host of loved ones and friends.
