Garry Allen Stumpf Obituary

Garry Allen Stumpf, age 71, passed away peacefully in his home on April 7, 2024. He was born on August 28, 1952, in Evansville, Indiana, to the late Charles and Nancy Stumpf McGuyer, whom he is survived by.

Raised in Evansville, Indiana, where he attended Mater Dei High School and went on to pursue his undergraduate degree at University of Evansville. He then went on to get his master’s degree in Hydrogeology from Indiana University.

In 1972, Garry joined the United States Army, where he served with honor and dedication for five years, stationed overseas in Okinawa, Japan. During his service, he exemplified the values of loyalty, integrity, and bravery, earning several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Marksman (Rifle) Medal. Garry's commitment to his country was unwavering, and he was honorably discharged in 1977.

Following his military service, Garry transitioned to a distinguished career at ExxonMobil as a Geologist, where he devoted 35 years of his life to the company. During this time, he led the North American Oil Spill Crisis Response team. He retired from ExxonMobil in 2017, and in his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf, smoking cigars, and fishing.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Garry cherished his role as a devoted husband, father, brother, son, and grandfather. He shared a deep and enduring bond with his beloved wife of 30 years, Donna, and was a source of unwavering support and love for his children: Steven (Lauren), Corey, and Kristin (Derek). He is survived by his siblings Larry (Kim), Terry (Angie), David, Kathy, and his mother Nancy. Garry also leaves behind 2 grandchildren, Owen and Avery, who brought immense joy and pride to his life.

His life was marked by a passion to serve and a love for his children. He was active in the community at Franklin Glen where he lived for 20+ years and was always going out of his way to help his neighbors. He served as PTA president at Lees Corner Elementary school while Corey and Kristin attended there, and he never missed an opportunity to chaperon a field trip. His favorite position that he ever held was as coach of children’s sport teams. He coached Steven for years as his baseball and basketball coach and went on to coach Kristin’s soccer and basketball teams for almost 13 years.

He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
